for the 1st time in my life i took care to listen to an entire session of S. Zizek talking about his philosophy, views and everything. (beforehand, only knew his work by second-hand expositions of excited admirers or concerned rivals; also some citations and over-prolonged excerpts). he was talking about the ongoing global catastrophe, how to handle it and how to be very clever and deeply smart about it, engaging the most philosophical approach.
if this disappointing heap of philosophically un-aesthetic, mostly truistic, pretensively-but-falsely-deep, disheveled sub-ideas, presented in the quasi-schizophrenic bubbling linguistic shitstorm of form, is the best that popular western philosophy is capable of these days... well, maybe indeed we navigate through a catastrophe right now. could feel like Moby Dick, but without the narrator (don't call me ishmael), without captain Ahab, putting our hopes in some imperceptible Queequeg to land a final blow, praying for him to be on our team.
my anguish is further exacerbated by the fact that this not-very-coherent flow of burst-like statements is submitted with such physioneurological effort, so that the innocent listener expects not less than a singular revelation of the ultimate truths, or for the very least, some queue of new astonishing ideas that will shatter our world picture into beautiful shards that will immediately reassemble into something so radically different, that we will have no choice but to change our ways forever in response, as a starting measure. but you know, you actually never should expect anything useful from your 21-century marxist. ah, yes, trigger warning, i just forgot.
then, a 2nd thought strikes: if some of the things he says really need to be explained to public (e.g., "contextualisation is not relativisation"), maybe the guy is right. to hell with proper philosophy and discipline of thought. we need to just beat some sense into people still capable of it, as quick as we can, and anything that works should be put to use. in this context, i start viewing him as a huge self-sacrifice for the general best. let it be so.
